Modern business travel looks more like a web than a straight line. A single trip might take you from London to Berlin to Paris. Historically, that’s meant phone calls with a travel manager, higher fees, and a lot of wasted time.
Today, we’re changing that.
Navan has unveiled its upgraded multi-city booking experience, designed to handle the most complex travel scenarios. Building on a major engineering breakthrough, the new functionality ensures travelers no longer need to rely on human travel agents for complex trips.
Multi-city booking is a significant engineering challenge. Any online booking tool must ingest thousands of variables across routes, carriers, and prices; analyze them; and present the results in a digestible format to the traveler. Each time another leg of a trip is added to an itinerary, the number of possible combinations increases exponentially.
“Multi-city booking is one of the hardest engineering challenges in travel, which is why legacy T&E platforms haven’t been able to offer it.”
- Ian Fette, Vice President, Engineering
Legacy tools were not designed to handle this complexity, forcing business travelers to book via phone or email, often paying higher fees and making bookings outside of company policies. This results in lost time, increased costs, and a lack of visibility for travel managers and finance teams.
Navan’s new multi-city engine offers the expertise of a seasoned travel agent through a powerful new algorithm that integrates modern content sources like New Distribution Capability (NDC) for better pricing, breaks down fare details for every flight, and manages multi-ticket checkouts reliably — even across multiple carriers. This combination of expanded inventory and smarter logic allows travelers to find and book better trips, faster.
"We spent years refining our one-way and round-trip booking flows until they were intuitive, fast, and beautiful,” said Ian Fette, Vice President of Engineering at Navan. “Multi-city booking is one of the hardest engineering challenges in travel, which is why legacy T&E platforms haven’t been able to offer it. We rebuilt our multi-city engine from the ground up, aiming to make booking a five-leg international trip as straightforward as a one-way flight home."
