We dove into the data of our AI customers to see just how fast their travel and expense activity is accelerating.

To establish a baseline, corporate travel as a whole is enjoying a healthy, highly reliable upward trajectory. According to the Navan Business Travel Benchmark, overall business travel activity grew 14.2% year-over-year in Q1 2026, marking its third consecutive year of robust, double-digit expansion.

AI Travel Growth vs. Market

But when we isolate AI-native companies, that steady growth line turns into a vertical spike. In Q1 2026, our AI customer cohort saw a massive 110% year-over-year jump in business travel-related activity — completely outpacing the broader corporate baseline.

How we defined “top AI companies”

To understand how fast this segment is growing, we started with CB Insights’ list of the top AI unicorns from 2025 and simply asked: Which of these are Navan customers?

The answer: 30 of the top 50 already use Navan, including Anthropic, Alphasense, Darktrace, OpenAI, Perplexity AI, Scale AI, and Waymo.

We then looked at anonymized, aggregated data from this AI customer cohort and compared it to the rest of our customer base. To ensure an accurate growth trend, we limited the index to long-term customers with consistent data since 2023.

All growth figures cited in this post are based on this methodology unless otherwise noted.

The takeaway is clear: AI firms are scaling too fast for manual, spreadsheet‑driven travel and expense (T&E) processes to keep up.

High-Velocity Growth, High-Fragmented Spend

When a company grows by triple digits in a single year, its spend patterns change. It isn’t just about more flights; it’s about the connective tissue of business travel.

In our AI cohort, we saw specific expense and travel categories leading the charge:

  • Internet Access: Up 138.5% YoY
  • Public Transport: Up 129.2% YoY
  • International Spend: Up 110.7% YoY
