I point them to customer case studies like Ryder, which has saved 21% overall with Navan, and 1st Phorm, where the savings on flights and hotels hit 43%. But sometimes people want more detail: Where are those savings coming from, specifically? Are they hard costs? What about efficiency savings? What are the other benefits of Navan?

That’s why we were excited to commission Forrester Consulting to analyze each facet of the Navan solution by conducting in-depth interviews with four customers who had switched and figure out exactly where they were seeing benefits.

Common Challenges

For the study, Forrester conducted interviews with decision-makers at companies that have managed travel and expense both with and without Navan.

The collective message was clear. Before Navan, these companies struggled with a range of T&E-related issues: Fragmented systems, limited visibility into data, manual processes for trip bookings, onerous expense reports, delayed reimbursements, and a lack of support were common pain points.

It’s no wonder that one result was unhappy employees who often booked travel outside of the company’s solution. And when travelers book off-platform, companies can’t fulfill their duty of care or take advantage of benefits like negotiated rates.

Forrester combined its findings into a composite organization, analyzed before-and-after T&E data around costs and time, and arrived at some eye-catching conclusions.

How Navan Benefits Companies*

• Reduction in hard costs. A 16% reduction in annual travel spend: That’s the savings Forrester found thanks to a variety of Navan features, such as negotiated rates, policy enforcement, and dynamic inventory access. Just the reduction in out-of-policy expense claims resulted in $300,000 in savings over three years, while the process of consolidating platforms enabled savings of $80,000. The customers Forrester interviewed also cited savings that came through Navan’s Rewards Program, which is exactly why Navan created it.
• Productivity gains. Saving 10–15 minutes for each trip booking and 24 minutes for each expense report filing — that’s the kind of time employees got back, the Forrester study found. In fact, Forrester found productivity savings of more than $350,000 from travel bookings as well as streamlined support (which Navan offers globally, 24/7/365, providing answers within 45 seconds on average). Expense management automation alone helped drive gains of $1.2 million over three years in the composite organization.
• Unquantified benefits. Some of Navan’s advantages extend beyond measurable time and cost savings, said the study. Navan provides enhanced safety through better duty of care than legacy solutions, as well as analytics tools that allow for better cash flow tracking. Additionally, Forrester found that Navan provides two other benefits highly prized by companies: ease of use and scalability.

Through its analysis, Forrester found that Navan’s benefits extended beyond significant savings in hard costs, which is exactly why we built and developed Navan the way we have. Our goal has been to make the logistics of business travel — from booking and support to expense reports and reconciliation — as efficient as possible, so companies can focus on getting business done as effectively as possible.

So what did the Forrester study find when adding up all the benefits the four Navan customers reaped from Navan? Forrester calculated a total benefit of $9.1 million over three years for the composite organization, with an ROI of 376%.
